In a poignant and heartfelt moment during its 2025 commencement ceremony on May 22, 2025, the Penn-Trafford School District honored Jacob Lazar, a beloved senior who tragically lost his life last year in an accident involving a fallen tree.
Principal Mr. Tony Aquilio opened the ceremony with these words:
Before we move forward in celebration, we want to take a moment to honor and remember one of our own who is not physically with us tonight but whose impact on our lives and community will never be forgotten.
Jacob Lazar was a dedicated student, an active volunteer fireman, and an Eagle Scout who exemplified service, leadership, and compassion in everything he did. He was someone who lived to give back, a true reflection of the values we hold dear in our community. Jacob passed away before his senior year began in an accident while doing what he did best: helping others.
Jacob’s selflessness, kindness, and commitment to others touched everyone around him. He has left his mark on not just this school but the entire community. As we gather here tonight, we dedicate this ceremony to Jacob’s memory and the extraordinary example he set for us all. In the chair to my left, you will see an empty chair with flowers, cap, tassels and an honorary diploma for Jacob.
I ask the class of 2025 to carry Jacob’s spirit of giving and service with you as you move forward, honoring his legacy in how you choose to live your own lives.
Please join me in a moment of silence as we reflect on Jacob’s life, his service, and the countless ways he inspired us.
