Penn-Trafford High School has received the ‘AP Computer Science Female Diversity Award’ from the College Board. The award recognizes schools offering AP Computer Science Principles that are closing the gender equity gap in computer science.
At Penn-Trafford High School, there was only one female in the AP Computer Science course (out of a class of 25, or 4%) during the 2014-15 school year. That number has steadily grown to 21 females in a class of 57 (37%) during the current school year.
Principal Tony Aquilio credits teacher Marty Corna for the increased numbers. “Mrs. Corna has single-handedly helped close the gender gap in AP Computer Science,” commented Aquilio. “Her leadership in creating more equitable access and interest by females is helping prepare more women for high paying, in-demand computer careers in the future.”
